“A team of interns and employees recently found that a powerful answer can be as small as a meal served to the homeless.”

From the office environment in our operations center at Basking Ridge, N.J., the group traveled to Paterson and spent the day at Eva's Village, where they served 400 lunches, toured the facility and visited the women’s and children shelter along with the medical and dental facilities.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my four weeks interning with The Verizon Foundation, but going to Eva’s Village added an extra dimension to my experience,” said Christian Warneke, a graduate student at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.

Warneke, who is pursuing his master’s degree in Public Administration, said seeing a company the size of Verizon take such a strong interest in its community made him feel even better about his experience.

Donnie Schumann, who is pursuing a master’s degree at the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Ariz., said having the opportunity to serve Eva’s clients added a whole new perspective on the gravity of each individual situation.

“In the past, while volunteering at other ‘soup kitchens,’ the process of working a food line made me feel disconnected from the people on the other side of the table,” Schumann said. “The food line acted like a barrier in an atmosphere that was far from uplifting.  At Eva’s Village, it amazed me to see how this small, simple difference created an atmosphere full of positivity and warmth that I hadn’t experienced before. The sound of conversation and even laughter in the Dining Hall helped me understand the strong sense of community at Eva’s.”

Eva's Village is a comprehensive, non-profit social service organization dedicated to fighting homelessness and poverty. Its mission is to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, treat the addicted and provide medical and dental care to the poor with respect for the human dignity of each individual.
