Helping Our Community Restore the Shore

Employees took up shovels and paint brushes during a daylong volunteer effort on Thursday, March 28 at the Hugh J. Boyd Jr. Elementary School in Seaside Heights, N.J. The school took a ferocious beating from Hurricane Sandy and has yet to reopen its doors for students to attend classes.

Participants included more than 160 employees from the Verizon Leadership Development Program - plus senior leaders. The Verizon Foundation and the nonprofit Jersey Cares organized the event, welcoming Seaside Heights Mayor William Akers and others who came by to express their appreciation.

"Financially this has helped us a lot, where we can take that money and utilize it for other things such as desks, wireless Internet or iPads," said Hugh J. Boyd Jr. Principal Chris Raichle. "We can use this money we're saving today by having so many volunteers here to concentrate on other educational components, so it's a huge help to us."
