Fourth Grade Teacher Enters the Verizon Thinkfinity Home Run Sweepstakes and Scores!
Congratulations to Rosemary Smith, a fourth grade teacher at Byram Lake Elementary in Stanhope, N.J. for winning a $10,000 grant in Verizon's Home Run Sweepstakes.
Smith was one of more than 1,700 teachers in the New York metropolitan area who entered the free, month-long contest on www.Thinkfinity.org in the hopes of winning a technology makeover for their classroom. "What a thrill to win the grand prize of $10,000 for technology!" Smith exclaimed. "Our school's budget has been significantly cut this year, so this money will certainly come in handy."
The grant was presented on Sunday, June 27th at Citi Field prior to the New York Mets' game against the Minnesota Twins. The Mets provided 50 free admission tickets to Smith's students who accompanied their teacher on the field for the ceremony. Joseph Scaccia, director of finance and operations for the Verizon Foundation stated, "We're proud to partner with the New York Mets to provide Ms. Smith and her students with a memorable afternoon at the ballpark and, more importantly, access to educational tools that will enrich the classroom when students return to school in the fall."
Verizon's Home Run Sweepstakes is one of many initiatives underway to help teachers become more aware of the thousands of free educational tools, lesson plans, and after-school activities Thinkfinity.org has to offer.
"I hope to use the money to purchase a few Smart Boards," said Rosemary Smith. "The children love the interactive features and they can be used for so many unique things. Our students will benefit from this money for years to come. Thank you, Verizon!"
