Every Tuesday night, Anthony Rescigno and his daughters help pack 300 meals for children to sustain them for the weekend.
For the past year and a half, Anthony Rescigno, a senior consultant in our Verizon Enterprise Solutions group, has been volunteering at the Chester County Food bank in Pennsylvania with his two daughters, Emily, 8, and Ashley, 12.
“Every Tuesday night we pack 300 meals for children in the area to sustain them for the weekend,” Anthony said. “Chester County is one of the top 25 wealthiest counties in the United States, and still has over 80,000 people who need assistance. Most are elderly folks who are on a fixed income and children.”
The packs contain items such as cereal, condensed milk, peanut butter and granola bars for kids who often go hungry on the weekends. The Food Bank backpack program is helping 1,000 kindergarten children a month, so they don’t have to skip meals over the weekend or face two days without food.
About 12,000 school-age children in Chester County face hunger every day. They rely on the free or reduced meals at school to help, but when the weekend arrives, they are not sure if there will be food to eat.
The food bank also supplies about 180 meals per month to seniors in the area.
“I take the girls with me about 2/3 of the time,” Anthony said. “They are kind of bummed out about it when they have a test to study for and have to miss out. Everyone at the food bank looks forward to them showing up on Tuesdays.”
Other volunteer activities at the Chester County Food bank include helping out with corporate food drives by sorting incoming donations, the gleaning program where volunteers work with local farms in the area to prep fields and pick and shuck corn and a full time kitchen is open every weekday.
